13 Scary Movies for October!

[Updated on 10/25/2011]

In celebration of my favorite holiday and the month in which it falls, I’ve scoured through Netflix to pick out my top horror movie recommendations. If you’re looking for a Halloween movie experience, but don’t know what to watch, start with these.

In alphabetical order (all are currently streaming at Netflix; I’ve marked my personal favorites in bold):

An American Werewolf in London
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon [clever, if flawed, spoof of the slasher genre]
The Evil Dead
The Exorcist
The Fog
In the Mouth of Madness
Lake Mungo
The Last Exorcism
Let the Right One In
[the original, not the boring American remake]
Night of the Living Dead
Scream
Them
[the 2007 French film, Ils]
–> Trick ‘r Treat [if you can only watch one, pick this one]

Bonus Movies:

The Alphabet Killer [feels like a TV movie, but for some reason I really enjoyed it]
Creep [not Christopher Smith’s best but Severance and Triangle are not on Netflix; Black Death is, but not under “Horror”]
From Dusk Till Dawn [more fun than scary]
Paranormal Activity [if you’re tempted to watch this and haven’t seen Lake Mungo yet, watch Lake Mungo]
Scream 3 [this one’s on the list because of my Parker Posey crush]
Session 9 [more of a creepy thriller than horror]
Troll 2 [the “worst movie ever made”–watch with a group of snarky friends]

And an honorable DO-NOT-WATCH-AT-ANY-COST award goes to:

Murder-Set-Pieces [Seriously, it’s worse than Troll 2. Seriously, I’m serious. Whatever you do, don’t watch this piece of crap. If you want something “extreme” but that’s well made, check out Martyrs.]

Let me add LAKE MUNGO to the list. Very creepy. I’ll have a review of it posted soon…
